Hi there! My name is Hikari. I’m a journalist, writer, and translator (English/Japanese) originally from Tokyo, Japan.
I am now freelancing based out of Bangkok, Thailand. My journalism and essays have appeared in the New York Times, National Geographic, Mastermind Magazine, among other publications.
I am particularly interested in capturing stories about everyday people who don’t often have the chance to be heard. I also enjoy writing profiles and features on culture and identity, and have a deep interest in books.
I started my professional career in the Tokyo bureau of the New York Times, traveling across Japan writing news and features on a range of topics including gender, politics, culture, identity, mental health, and climate change.
I am keen to hear about your freelance or contract opportunities — have a project, book recommendation, or just want to say hi? Let’s talk! You can reach me at hikarimaehida@gmail.com.
